Water Productivity Improvement in Practice

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)'s main objective is to provide directly or indirectly or in collaboration with other institutions of higher learning, facilities for university education including agriculture, scientific, cultural, technological, and professional education, and integration of teaching, research and effective application of knowledge and skills to the life, work and welfare of citizens of Kenya. 

As the WaterPIP knowledge hub, the Department of Geomatic Engineering and Geospatial Information Systems (GEGIS) has received several training of trainers and in May 2022 implemented the first training on "WaPOR from database to knowledge" to 35 participants. The training included an Introduction to QGIS and the WaPOR portal, Introduction to Water Productivity in Agriculture, Performance indicators, Spatio-temporal analysis using Python in Cloud, spatial analysis using QGIS, among others. In addition the WaterPIP knowledge hub at JKUAT is implementing two case studies, linking field level observations with the remote sensing analyses. The case studies are:

  • Monitoring Irish Potato Production, Nyandarua Case Study
  • On-farm water management to enhance land and water productivity based on remote sensing WaPOR database at the Galana Kulalu irrigation scheme, Kenya
